October Snowlight

I stood for a little while under the streetlamp tonight
Giggling in snowlight
I couldn't decide if the golden leaves thought all this
Was a nightmare before christmas
Or more joy than an October night could hold
The road, my hair, covered in ice
All seemed to glow with softest warmth
"Aha" I sighed
So it is possible to return
Through the wardrobe after all
To slip out the window with the ageless boys shadow
I wasn't certain that I stood on concrete
When it might just have easily been
Ophelia's holy river
Pulling me back into the dreamlands
Frosted flowers in my hair
Shoes lost to the current
When I retired to the lofts after a moments gleeful pause
And my darling fairy sister
Whispered in contented tones
That she suspected her room was pleasantly haunted
My heart smiled
And I was little again
And I could hear the meadowlark and the silver bells
Saw the white owl swoop low
And the lights flicker in the trees
Haunted, I thought to myself
So that's the word for it
This stab of joy
Flight of fancy
Soft footsteps in the sunset woods
A touch on the shoulder
Heart-shaped stones at the oceans mouth
Everything crying ghostly
That there is more than meets the bared eye
The numbed ears
The tired mind
I stood for a little while under the streetlamp tonight
Giggling in snowlight
Forgot if there was just one world
Or an endless hall of curtains
All of them torn
All of them covered in the softness of the white
Snow

Good Morning

I went down to meet the meadow
One dawn when the fog was a great cloud on the street below
I passed through the gardeners gate
Scaled the fallen elm
Covered in moss and yellow snails
Only one little cow saw me pass through
And she didn't have the time to say good morning
Too busy mowing the lawn
Just where the river met the far of the lane
A bluebird was perched
In the oldest birch tree
Watching the sunlight on the water
And the dragonflies pestering the lilies
And me
She didn't have the time to say good morning
Too busy watching life happen
Great swirls of being
Tilting the planet toward the light
Growing the sweet grass
Pulling the water to fill the deep
Waking me at dawn
Calling my name, brushing dreams from my eyes
And the door open as I tumbled down the lane
There wasn't any special message
My little bird never spoke a word
All anyone, all anything said was
Come and be here now
Come down to meet the meadow
And the mayflies and the daisies
Come and climb over whatever has fallen in your path
Make your way to the water
Let the only greeting be the smile in the corner of your mouth
Wink to your brothers and sisters
Who sit with you by the shore
As it all wakes up all over again
